Grace Kraaijvanger, Founder of The Hivery, shares her thoughts on the New Year.
Phew. We made it through the holidays. As much as I love the celebrations, the kids' excitement, and the tradition, I can't help but feel drained by the time we bring December to a close. I tend to put enormous pressure on myself to wrap up every idea, project, email, process, or to-do from the prior year into a perfectly completed state, AND simultaneously create the perfect new beginning in the upcoming year, full of plans, decisions, resolutions, and organization. No wonder I exited 2015 feeling exhausted.
So this New Year, I chose three words instead of resolutions. Words to remind me of my purest intentions (of what I really want to do). Words that cut through the "shoulds" and focus solely on intention. My three words (and my commitments) in 2016 are to live with: Bravery, as an Artist, and with Grace. Here's why:
BRAVERY: My decision in 2016 is to bravely leap forward (even, or especially when, I'm scared) to build the best Hivery that I can. I'm committed to creating a movement of women who have the courage to live our vibrant lives as who we truly are, rather than what is expected of us (either by society, culture, or the pressure we've put on ourselves). Being brave matters, big time. It is the difference between thoughts and actions, between waiting and living.
ARTIST: Through The Hivery (and beyond), I am committed to living my life as an artist, devoted to creating something beautiful, meaningful, and helpful in this world. I'm committed to the artistic way of embracing the process, instead of focusing on the outcome. Of serving the art that is life, versus serving the busy-ness that is the day-to-day. From a life in ballet, I embrace discipline and ritual, yet I also honor the creatively unexpected, the willingness to take risk, the commitment to humility, yet fearlessness. That is an artist, and I am surrounded by them. This title is not only for the traditional "artists" in my life, but for each of you in the Hivery community that commits to leaping, using your voice, stepping up and out, and putting yourselves out there. Artists change the world.
GRACE: My dear Mom gave me this beautiful title, and the more I learn about the meaning of the word "grace" the more I feel committed to living by what she named me that very first day in her arms. I am reminded that "grace" means to create beauty in form or space, a gracious gift, and to be in service. As Bono says, "Along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that "as you reap, so you will sow" stuff. Grace defies reason and logic... I'd be in big trouble if Karma was going to finally be my judge. I'd be in deep s---. It doesn't excuse my mistakes, but I'm holding out for Grace."
So with my three words: Bravery, Artist, and Grace, I invite you in 2016 to commit to your words of intention, and share them here on the blog. The Hivery is here for you as you set your intentions and we look forward to a vibrant 2016 together.
